Briefing
The application required rewriting due to its outdated code base. This presented an excellent opportunity to refresh the look and feel and enhance the user experience across the entire application. While retaining the proven layout, which has been effective, I aimed to modernize and optimize functionality to better serve user needs.
Approach
As soon as I heard about this project, I got many ideas for improvements. However, before implementing any changes, I gathered feedback from clients, partners, and colleagues to gain a comprehensive understanding of the necessary steps.
The new interface
The new design features a noticeable increase in contrast and attention to detail. A consistent system for sizes, spacing, fonts, and color usage has been implemented, creating a more structured appearance across the application. This new system is designed for use in other WoodWing applications as well.
A simple navigation structure is added to help users orient themselves within the application. The highlight color (salmon) is used sparingly but strategically, giving it greater impact. Additionally, the incorporation of illustrations and rounded corners throughout contributes to a friendlier and more modern interface. The application also communicates better and provides assistance to prevent users from reaching dead ends.
The dark side
Of course, a dark mode couldn’t be omitted from the application. Not only is it a standard in modern design, but it also improves the visibility and impact of digital assets. Furthermore, all shared components have been designed with dark mode in mind from the beginning, simplifying the creation of these pages.
Developer hand-off
After completing all visual designs and implementing new UX elements where necessary, I documented detailed descriptions of the designs on Confluence. These descriptions focused on dissecting and zooming in on the various building blocks of the interface. Subsequently, I presented these documents to the development team and provided guidance throughout the development process. This involved addressing their inquiries and supplying all necessary assets for application construction. Additionally, I meticulously offered feedback, down to the pixel level.
My role
As the Visual Designer for all our applications, I encountered the challenge of the product's UX designer departing just before the project commenced. I took the responsibility of creating all visual designs while implementing various UX improvements to enhance the user experience. Throughout the process, I consistently collaborated with our other UX designer to ensure alignment with our design principles. Additionally, I had previously created the logo during a period of more extensive involvement in marketing work.
